Lesson 5 · The kind voice
After a mistake, one plain, kind sentence to yourself, as you’d say it to a friend. Then one next step.
Use it when the harsh voice starts: after a slip, a forgotten thing, a bad call.
A moment first
Grounding
One sound, to begin
Not recorded yet.
Wherever you are… just as you are.
Eyes open is fine.
Without effort…
letting one sound find you.
Whatever is there — near or far.
If it's unpleasant… choosing another.
Resting your attention on it gently.
Following it the way you might follow a thread.
When attention drifts…
returning.
Just this sound.
Just this moment.
No effort.
No goal.
Present.
Grounding
Weight and warmth, to begin
Not recorded yet.
Wherever you are… just as you are.
Eyes open is fine.
Noticing the weight of your body…
where it meets the chair… the floor… the earth beneath you.
Feeling the warmth of your hands.
Moving, if you need to.
Just letting the body be
exactly as it is.
Held.
Here.
Present.

Breath
The breath, already here
Finding a comfortable position.
Taking one slow breath in…
and a gentle exhale…
Returning to the natural rhythm of the breath…
already here.
As the breath moves…
just noticing it.
Rising…
and falling.
Nothing to change…
nothing to control.
And now…
just resting with the breath.
The practice
The kind voice

Hi. It's Matthew again.
This one's for after a mistake… when the voice in your head turns harsh.
It's called The kind voice.
Thinking of something you got wrong lately. Something small.
Hearing what you said to yourself about it.
Now… what you'd say to a friend who did the same thing.
Saying that sentence to yourself. Plainly.
If kind feels like a stretch right now… a fair sentence works too.
"That was a mistake. I can take the next step."
Once more, with fewer words.
One kind sentence… one next step.
And once on your own. I'm right here.
Next time you hear the harsh voice…
one kind sentence… then one next step.
What to keep
Next time you hear the harsh voice, try the friend’s sentence once.
Why this
Why: The kind voice
Not recorded yet.
A quick word on why.
You use this after a mistake… when the voice in your head turns harsh.
The harsh voice doesn't fix anything. It just makes the next step heavier.
A friend's sentence is plain and fair… and it leaves you able to move.
That's why the practice is one sentence… then one step.
It won't fix the thing that went wrong. It changes how you talk to yourself while you fix it.
A quick question
You forgot something important and you’re calling yourself stupid. What’s the practice here?
Just for practice. Nothing is saved.
