Moment 3 · One breath out
A moment first
Grounding
One sound, to begin
A minute to arrive: one sound, near or far.
Wherever you are… just as you are.
Without effort…
letting one sound find you.
Whatever is there — near or far.
If it's unpleasant… choosing another.
Resting your attention on it gently.
Following it the way you might follow a thread.
When attention drifts…
returning.
Just this sound.
Just this moment.
No effort.
No goal.
Grounding
Weight and warmth, to begin
A minute to arrive: the weight of your body, the warmth of your hands.
Noticing the weight of your body…
where it meets the chair… the floor… the earth beneath you.
Feeling the warmth of your hands.
Moving, if you need to.
Just letting the body be
exactly as it is.
Held.
Here.
Grounding
The breath, to begin
A minute to arrive: the breath, already here.
Wherever you are… just as you are.
Taking one slow breath in…
and a gentle exhale…
Returning to the natural rhythm of the breath…
already here.
As the breath moves…
just noticing it.
Rising…
and falling.
Nothing to change…
nothing to control.
The practice
One breath out
A pause before the next thing: one breath out, a little longer if that’s comfortable, feet on the floor, eyes open, then go.
Use it before you walk in, pick up the phone, or start the next task.
This one's for the moment before the next thing. The door. The call. The next task. “One breath out”.
Letting one breath out… a little longer than usual, if that's comfortable.
If the breath isn't easy for you… just feet… and eyes.
Feeling your feet on the floor… or the seat under you.
Eyes open… seeing the room you're in.
And then… the next thing.
Once more, with fewer words.
Breath out… feet… eyes… go.
And once on your own.
Next time you're about to walk in… or pick up the phone…
one breath out… feet… eyes open… then go.
What to keep
Pick a door you go through every day. That’s your cue.
Why this
Why: One breath out
Why choosing a door ahead of time carries this into your day.
You use this before the next thing. At the door. Before you pick up the phone. Before you start.
Deciding ahead of time helps. "When I reach the door, I'll let one breath out." That's what carries the skill into your day.
It won't make the next thing easy. It makes it a little better. That's the whole idea.
A quick question
Before you open the door…
one breath out · feet · eyes open · then go
Just for practice. Nothing is saved.
